The Progressive farmer from Katepara village, Jharkhand

Subhash Chandra Sinku hails from Katepara village of Karanjia Gram Panchayat in the Jagannath block (West Singbhum). He is a progressive farmer and quickly adapts to new technology. During the E-PRA planning process in the Jiwi Daah Hasa project under the Jharkhand High Impact Mega Watershed Project, he expressed his interest in pond construction. In collaboration with the Tata Steel Foundation, a pond measuring 120 ft x 100 ft x 10 ft was constructed in 2023.

Starting with pisciculture, he layered his pond with vegetable cultivation at the bund, covered the inner slope with Arhar (pigeon pea), trellised at the bund, duck rearing, and a compost pit, integrated with natural farming practices. This year, just before the monsoon, he stocked around 20 kg of fingerlings in the month of March. After about 7 months, he harvested about 15 kg of table fish in the first lot and sold it at 240/kg, earning Rs. 3600 from pisciculture. Before stocking, he participated in the 5 days of rearing pond training under the Department of Fisheries.

This season, he has cultivated tomato, cabbage, pea, cauliflower, and chilli at the pond using natural farming practices, and expects a good return. Before the JDH SUPPORT team intervention, he was only fishing. With the team's efforts, he transformed his pond into an integrated pond and is currently using every inch of the pond & bund area, ensuring his year-round livelihood from it. This integration ensures the interlinking of resources and utilisation, reduces cultivation costs, reduces risk, and assures income. Activities include Pisciculture, Vegetable cultivation at bund, Trellis (Machaan), Duck rearing and Arhar (Pigeon Pea)
