Nita Singh, like many others in her community, was initially bound to the traditional ways of agriculture. But slowly she diversified her activities, learned new things and evolved from a mere farmer into an Agri-Entrepreneur.

Transforming Livelihoods: Nita's Year-Round Agricultural Success

Hailing from the small village of Robkera in Jharkhand, Nita only harvested paddy once a year. Joining the Jiwi Daah Hasa project has given her access to new and improved agricultural practices and more knowledge which has helped her improve her livelihood.

“Previously I was dependent on rainfall for all my irrigation needs. But then I got a Farm Pond and a Well under the MGNREGA. Now I irrigate my fields using this water only”, says Nita with a smile.

Due to the availability of water all around the year, Nita can now grow multiple crops. Cultivating crops around the year, comparatively to one harvest a year, has efficiently increased her income. Embracing techniques like trellis farming, fisheries, and duck rearing, Nita has built a diverse portfolio, ensuring that even during lean times, her family’s well-being is safeguarded.

She also tried her hands at a Polyhouse in which she planted a nursery of Papaya. “I sold one sapling for Rs. 25 and overall was able to earn Rs. 15,000, making it another source of my earnings,” said Nita, adding yet another stream to her growing income.

Natural Farming: Nita's Cost-Effective Approach

She abstains from chemical fertilisers or pesticides, relying instead on natural solutions like vermicompost and Jeevamrit, which she makes herself. In this way, she not only promotes natural farming but also saves a lot of money which otherwise she would’ve spent on purchasing fertilisers from the market.

The income from these diverse sources has profoundly impacted her life, significantly boosted her earnings and improved her livelihood. Her story is one among the many which has been impacted by the Jiwi Daah project.
